Executive Director

Position Summary:

Yes! And… Collaborative Arts (YACA), a nonprofit organization, seeks a full time Executive Director to oversee, grow, and enhance the vision of YACA’s youth development programs while also managing the current administrative systems and expanding YACA’s fundraising.
With over twenty years (six years as a 501c3) of serving a diverse group of young people all over the Philadelphia region, YACA continues to grow in capacity and impact. Based on an original pedagogy of Tribe Centred Learning (TCL), YACA offers a diverse range of programs teaching collaboration and expanding young people's experience, capacity and compassion. At its Core, YACA is a youth development and social change organization using the arts as a framework for teaching youth of their agency in shaping themselves and their communities.

Key Responsibilities:

The Executive Director will be responsible for overseeing an annual budget of $250,000 to $300,000 and a staff of 2 full time and up to 50 part time/seasonal employees. The Executive Director will maintain fundraising levels and grow income and donations from foundations and individual donors, and earned income from YACA’s business operations.

Development and Communications

Development: The Executive Director leads, develops and oversees all fundraising activities and income-earning programs that bring money into the organization, including:.

  • Leading communication with donor contacts, cultivate donor prospects, and develop major donor program
  • Creating and overseeing the execution of an annual appeal
  • Seeking and maintaining government funding
  • Cultivating major corporate gifts and sponsorships
  • Applying for and writing all appropriate grants. Seeking new grant opportunities.
  • Working with the board to create an annual fundraising plan
  • Working with Program Director and board on earned income goals and opportunities
  • Supporting and collaborating with YACA Board on fundraising beyond events including grants, sponsors, donors and government funding
  • Being the face of YACA at all fundraising events

Communication: The Executive Director develops and oversees the YACA communications strategies, including:

  • Representing YACA at public events, community meetings and networking opportunities
  • Developing and maintaining YACA’s media and digital presence
  • Leading communications with parents, donors, grant managers and community stakeholders.


Organizational Leadership and Program Development

LEADERSHIP: The Executive Director leads the organization toward the practical realization of its mission, vision, annual budget and strategic plan.

  • Working with Program Director and other key staff to establish short and long term program goals.
  • Inspiring staff to embody and champion YACA’s mission and values.
  • Supporting staff development and accountability, innovation, and a spirit of collaboration within YACA’s staff and among YACA’s partners including parents and families.
  • Participating in board leadership and development (serving on Executive Committee, attending other committee meetings as appropriate and necessary)
  • Overseeing the board’s work on the Strategic Plan and following the adopted plan.
  • Reporting regularly to the Board and committees aiding in the discernment and direction of the organization.
  • Evaluating program success against stated goals, budget impact, and Strategic Planning.

LEGAL COMPLIANCE: The Executive Director is familiar with, and assures that the organization complies with relevant laws and regulations, with the assistance of legal counsel where necessary, including the following activities:

  • Maintaining active communication with regulatory agencies
  • Undertaking IRS and PA State reporting
  • Ensuring compliance with local, state, and federal laws, and ensuring timely completion of YACA’s audit.


Financial Management and HR Oversight

FIDUCIARY: The Executive Director prepares and executes an annual budget and completes all necessary filings in concert with a professional accountant and the Finance Committee of the Board. Additionally, the Executive Director oversees the organization’s day-to-day financial operations, including accounts receivable and accounts payable.

    • Accounting updates

    HUMAN RESOURCES: The Executive Director oversees the hiring, termination, compensation, and eligibility verification of all YACA staff and volunteers managed by the Program Director and other key staff.

    • Performing annual staff evaluations
    • Working with Program Director & Artistic Director on key hires
    • Developing or providing opportunities for needed staff training
    • Verifying that all the organization’s employees and volunteers have the clearances, training, supplies, and support necessary to flourish in their work.



    The ideal Executive Director candidate will have:

    • A passion for working with and for young people in Philadelphia, and have an unshakable belief in their potential and a strong commitment to the mission, vision and values of YACA
    • Strong development and fundraising skills including grant development, planned giving, major gifts, and direct mail appeals
    • Understanding of nonprofit financial management and bookkeeping including experience with accounting software and P&L statements
    • Experience in direct management and leadership within a nonprofit setting
    • A history of building strong rapport with staff and Board members
    • Be facile at balancing mission and margin while advocating for both
    • Background and knowledge of social justice work, community organizing, positive youth development, and Philadelphia’s Arts and nonprofit networks is strongly preferred

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

    • Bachelor of Arts or Science degree. Demonstrated experience in fundraising, leadership and administration
    • Excellent writing and public speaking skills, as well as the ability to articulate issues affecting the youth YACA serves
    • Excellent interpersonal, press, and public relations skills
    • Comfort with using Google Drive and accounting software
    • Successful passing of PA State Police Criminal Background Check, Pennsylvania Child Abuse History Clearance, and FBI Clearance required
